Maison des Arts de Bischwiller
Details
Two artists native of Bischwiller lived in this picturesque 17th century Alsatian house, now the annex of the Laub Museum: Henri Baumer, famous for his wood inlays, and his son-in-law, Philippe Steinmetz, a painter.
Henri Baumer (1876-1968), a cabinet maker, was elected the best worker in France for marquetry, but he had many other talents: he made pen and ink drawings, models, coats of arms, family trees, besides being a knowledgeable local historian. His works are exhibited on the ground floor.
Philippe Steinmetz (1900-1987), an art teacher in Dunkirk, Lille, Nancy and Strasbourg, was an impressionist like Cézanne. His paintings reveal the influence of famous masters such as Signac, Le Sidaner or Ensor. He was a member of the Academy of Alsace. Scores of his works are displayed on the first floor.
