One hundred and forty years of an exceptional human adventure on display at the Sonnenhof Museum, or from the "Protestant Asylum for Idiots" to the "Cour du Soleil".
The "Protestant Asylum for Idiots", founded in Oberhoffen sur Moder in 1876 at the instigation of pastors, became the Sonnenhof Protestant Foundation, which in Bischwiller takes in around a thousand people, including the mentally retarded, the autistic, the multi-handicapped and the elderly...
The museum is the brainchild of Gerdy DREYER, a passionate retired educator. The idea of showcasing the Foundation's outstanding day-to-day work came to him when a number of priceless historical documents, including a founding document in German Gothic script, were discovered by chance in some old trunks. He has patiently collected period equipment, tools, clothing, wheelchairs and old photographs.
Everything is organized both chronologically and by focus: school, work, vacations, the war, the choir... A film completes the visit to a museum unlike any other, which highlights human values and reminds us that "every life is a light".
