City Hall

Details

Completed in 1910, the Town Hall is in the Neo-Baroque style. The imposing entrance is dominated by statues and windows richly decorated with 18th-century motifs. It was originally built as a courthouse. Above the ground-floor windows, grimacing masks are said to represent the city councillors opposed to the planned construction of the courthouse on this site. In 1955, the city and the Ministry of Justice exchanged premises. The court moved into the former town hall (Hôtel du Préteur Royal), while the municipal services moved here, into the former courthouse. The building on the left, on the other side of Rue des Chevaliers, is the covered Grand Manège. It was built in 1847 to enable garrison officers to work their horses in bad weather. To the left of the riding hall, at the corner of rue des Chevaliers and rue des Roses, stands an 18th-century house. This is the Maison Kreutter. It served as the residence of Tsar Alexander I during the Haguenau Conferences of June 1815, at the end of the Napoleonic Wars.
