In the heart of the Forêt d'Exception® de Haguenau, charcoal makers once lived. In the 11th century, their main activity was making charcoal from beech trees. A little hidden by vegetation, one of the two furnaces used to make charcoal is still visible today.
How did the furnace work? The cavity was filled with wood, with the chimneys providing the draught. The oven door was then closed to ensure a watertight seal, before lighting the fire "using a metal rod ignited by a rag".
According to Charles Schlosser, the forest still conceals charcoal pits, flat, round places where the millstones were mounted and under which charcoal can be found...
