La Forêt d'Exception® de Haguenau
Details
The sixth largest lowland forest in France, the Haguenau forest stretches 30 km from west to east and 10 km from north to southeast. Today, it's an ideal place for Haguenovians and visitors alike to relax. This green lung, which has been awarded the Forêt d'Exception® label, offers numerous possibilities for walks and activities! Residents and visitors alike come here to enjoy nature, meet up, work out, play... in short, to simply get away from it all.
The "Gros-Chêne" area, in the heart of the forest, is a popular spot for visitors: children's playground, picnic areas, an inn where you can enjoy a tarte flambée on the terrace... All the ingredients are there for a relaxing moment with family or friends.
Also worth a visit is Gloria Friedmann's oak monument, in honor of the tree that was felled by fire and lightning in the early 20th century, and the chapel of Saint-Arbogast, a hermit who is said to have lived here before becoming bishop of Strasbourg in the 6th century.
Le Gros Chêne is also the starting point for a number of signposted walking, cycling and fitness trails, as well as a path for people with reduced mobility (also ideal for baby carriages).
Walkers who go beyond the Gros-Chêne will discover many other treasures, including remarkable trees, ponds, tumuli and other vestiges of history elsewhere in the forest...
On foot, by bike or on horseback, a rich forest to discover all year round, as the seasons change, and where the landscape is punctuated by colors and smells.
Take advantage all year round of the Haguenau Forêt d'Exception® hidden treasures program, which offers walks, outings and excursions in the forest.
The forest map is available from the Haguenau Tourist Office.
The Tourist Office is now offering 12 hiking information sheets, including a bike ride (in hard copy or downloadable). These sheets have been designed to accompany you on your way, with detailed directions, anecdotes and suggested stops, enabling you to discover some of the forest's special features. Each hike is organized around a main theme: remarkable trees, natural and cultural heritage, forest management...
