Ohlungen

Details

The village of Ohlungen and its annex Keffendorf has 1,306 inhabitants. Agricultural activity remains very important in the village and is mainly oriented towards the cultivation of hops and cereals. The craft and commercial activity is also well represented. Stopped for 50 years, during a century, the extraction of oil has punctuated the lives of the inhabitants of the municipality. The village has 20 monuments listed by the Historical Monuments Department, including three calvaries and a stone cross "S'Pandurekrytel" dating from 1744 dedicated to an officer killed in a battle of the War of the Austrian Succession that took place near Ohlungen. The latter is located near the Klose chapel, which was first built in 1213 and rebuilt in 1804. A pear tree wooden Pietà that adorned the altar of the chapel was saved from destruction during the Revolution. Unfortunately, it was stolen in the 1970s. The chapel takes its name Klose - "Klause" meaning hermitage - from the presence of a small convent at the beginning of the Middle Ages, as evidenced by the presence of several tombs around it. In addition to the Klose chapel, the municipality also has two churches. One located in Ohlungen built during the First World War, the second is located in Keffendorf. The first writings relating this church date back to the 14th century. The village's associative life is not to be outdone. Indeed, we have 14 associations in fields as diverse as theatre, basketball, football and the amicale des retraités (retirees' association) and amis de la Nature (natures lovers' association). Grouped within the OSCL (Sports, Culture and Leisure Office), the latter organise the last weekend of August the hop festival with the election of a hop miss and the animation of the village punctuated by a parade of tanks. In addition, the Ohlungen Forest hosts the biennial Summerlied Music Festival, which brought together more than 16,000 festivalgoers for its 2018 edition around 46 shows with the support of 600 volunteers.
Finally, let us not forget the presence of a dynamic nursery and elementary school in the village that has created a fresco that covers the wall of the schoolyard.
