Details
The 2.56-metre-high building dates back to 1764. Acquired by the City of Haguenau in 1884, it came from the now-defunct Neubourg Abbey. It consists of several sandstone blocks, including a central one engraved with four sundials. On the south face, a Judaic or Biblical sundial on the upper level, and a local sundial on the lower level. East and west faces, symmetrical sundials. And on the north face, a Latin inscription of a Bible verse: "Watch therefore, for you know not what day your Lord will come". On the south face, above each sundial, straight styles - vertical rods - are planted in the sandstone. Their shadows follow the sun's path across the sky to interpret the time. However, the sundial's reading also relies on the numerous indications engraved on its contours: next to the monument, an explanatory panel and a QR code provide further information.
