The 6th largest lowland forest in France and the gateway to Northern Alsace, Haguenau Forest covers 21,000 hectares, stretching 30 km from west to east and 10 km from north to south. Its largest section, the Haguenau Forest, has been awarded the Forêt d’Exception^® label since 2020. A favourite place to relax for both locals and visitors, this green lung offers countless opportunities for walks and outdoor activities!

Discover a forest with many different faces, filled with hidden treasures, from remarkable trees, ponds and a birdwatching observatory to burial mounds and wartime remains… Whether on foot, by bike or on horseback, this rich and fascinating forest can be explored all year round, with each season bringing its own colours, scents and landscapes.

The Gros-Chêne site, in the heart of the forest, is a favourite destination for visitors, with a children’s playground, picnic areas and an inn where you can enjoy a meal. Everything you need for a relaxing time with family or friends!

Here, you can discover the remains of the Gros-Chêne, a remarkable oak tree that was struck by lightning in 1913, next to the Saint-Arbogast Chapel, named after the hermit who is said to have lived beneath the oak before becoming Bishop of Strasbourg in the 6th century.

Gros-Chêne is also the starting point for numerous signposted trails, cycle touring routes, fitness trails, as well as a route accessible to people with reduced mobility and suitable for pushchairs.
